Eight Classic Styles
Every silhouette is offered in any of our six leathers, three constructions, and unlimited colour and detailing combinations. These are starting points, not constraints.
The Oxford
牛津鞋 / オックスフォード
The Oxford — or Balmoral — is the foundation stone of formal menswear. Its defining characteristic is the closed lacing system: the facings are sewn beneath the vamp, creating a clean, unbroken line from toe to throat. No other shoe communicates formality with such authority.
We offer the Oxford in three interpretations: the Plain Toe (entirely seamless across the vamp — the most austere and therefore the most elegant), the Cap Toe (a transverse seam dividing vamp from toe cap — the standard of diplomatic and military dress), and the Medallion Toe (a decorative punched design on the toe cap, adding quiet personality).
The Derby
德比鞋 / ダービー
In the Derby — also called the Gibson — the quarters are sewn on top of the vamp, allowing the throat to open and close more liberally. This makes the Derby the natural choice for a wider instep, fuller ankle, or simply a preference for a more relaxed elegance.
Less ceremonially rigid than the Oxford, the Derby sits comfortably from the boardroom to the country house. In tan or mid-brown calf, with a rubber city sole, it is the quintessential London business shoe. In suede, it becomes the perfect companion for flannel trousers and a tweed hacking jacket.
The Monk Strap
孟克鞋 / モンクストラップ
Originating in Alpine monasteries, the monk strap replaces laces entirely with one or two horizontal straps fastened by a buckle. The double monk — two straps and buckles — has become one of the defining shoes of contemporary dressed men. The contrast of the metallic buckle against polished leather creates an effect of restrained luxury.
We offer single and double monk configurations. Buckles are available in gold, antique gold, and silver — and may be engraved with your initials upon request. Particularly striking in cognac, tobacco suede, or oxblood museum calf.
The Chelsea Boot
切尔西靴 / チェルシーブーツ
Designed in 1851 by Queen Victoria's shoemaker, the Chelsea boot introduced the elasticated side panel — a revolutionary mechanism that allows the boot to grip the ankle firmly while permitting easy donning and removal. The clean, heel-to-toe silhouette has since become a classic of every style era from the Beatles to the boardroom.
Our Chelsea boots feature hand-lasted uppers, a choice of leather or rubber sole, and the option of a pointed, almond, or round toe. In smooth black calf with a leather sole, it achieves formal dress shoe status. In chestnut suede with a rubber sole, it becomes the perfect city casual boot.
The Loafer
乐福鞋 / ローファー
The loafer is perhaps the most quietly aristocratic of all shoes — a slip-on that requires the foot to hold it in place, demanding, and rewarding, a certain deliberate carriage. We offer three expressions: the Penny (a strap with a coin slot across the vamp), the Tassel (two tassels of matching leather hanging from a strap), and the Horsebit (a gold stirrup bit mounted across the saddle).
The ideal loafer has almost no break-in period and can be worn sockless in summer with ease. In burgundy shell cordovan, a pair of DAYUAN loafers will outlast every garment in your wardrobe — and look better at twenty years than at twenty days.
Wholecut
整切鞋
The ultimate minimalist dress shoe — carved from a single piece of flawless leather. No seams to interrupt the flow of the upper. The most technically demanding of all constructions, and the most striking in its simplicity. Reserved for our finest box calf and shell cordovan hides.
CommissionFull Brogue
全布洛克鞋
The Scotsman's field shoe that conquered the world. Wingtip toe cap with decorative perforations along every seam — available in semi-brogue, full brogue, and longwing configurations. Particularly dramatic in two-tone leather: dark brown upper with tan broguing. An exercise in exuberant craft.
CommissionChukka Boot
查卡靴
Two or three open eyelets, ankle height, and an open throat that breathes elegance in all seasons. Originally a polo boot adapted for civilian life — now the most versatile boot in any wardrobe. In sand suede with a crepe sole it is unmatched for intelligent weekend dressing.
CommissionBuilt to Last a Lifetime
Goodyear Welt
固特异缝制
A leather or linen welt is first stitched to the upper and insole. The outsole is then stitched to the welt — creating three layers of material between foot and ground, and allowing the entire sole unit to be replaced without any damage to the upper. A Goodyear-welted shoe, properly cared for, will outlast its owner.
Blake Stitch
布莱克缝制
A single stitch unites insole, upper, and outsole in one pass — producing a shoe of extraordinary thinness and suppleness. The Blake construction is the choice of Italian masters for its close-to-foot profile: the shoe wraps the foot rather than standing beneath it. Less water-resistant than the welt, but significantly more elegant in silhouette.
Hand-sewn Welt
手工沿条缝制
Every stitch placed individually by hand, with waxed linen thread, by a single master cordwainer. The hand-sewn welt represents the absolute pinnacle of the craft — found only in the world's most exclusive ateliers. No machine can replicate the specific tension, the angle, the human judgment of each individual stitch. Three to four days of dedicated work per pair.
The Art of Lasting Beauty
A DAYUAN shoe is an investment that rewards care. Properly maintained, our leathers deepen and improve with every year of wear — developing a patina unique to their owner.
Use Cedar Shoe Trees
Insert cedar shoe trees immediately after each wear. They absorb moisture, maintain shape, and impart a light cedar fragrance that discourages mould.
Brush After Every Wear
Use a natural horsehair brush to remove dust and dirt before it embeds in the grain. Circular motions, moderate pressure. This step takes 30 seconds and is the most important.
Cream & Polish Weekly
Apply a thin layer of matching cream polish with a cloth or finger. Allow to dry for 5 minutes, then buff with a clean horsehair brush. Wax polish once per month for a mirror shine.
Rotate Your Shoes
Wear the same pair no more than two consecutive days. Leather needs 24 hours to breathe and release moisture. A rotation of three pairs will give each pair a 20-year lifespan.
We offer a full resole and reconditioning service at our Osaka atelier. Send us your DAYUAN shoes at any time — we will restore them to their original splendour. Contact us for details.
